About our ‘Charitable Giving’ Program

Battered women’s shelters provide a safe haven for women and their children who are the victims of violent and abusive family members. Many of the women and children who find themselves at women’s shelters arrive without any of their belongings. Sometimes escaping an abusive situation doesn’t leave any time to grab personal items, let alone toiletries. Of course shelters are non-profits with limited resources, so while they do the best they can, their help is often minimum.
That’s where YesterYear Soap Charitable Giving comes into play. Their regular donations of beautiful soaps mean the world to battered women who just left their lives behind. YesterYear Soap Company is a retail and wholesaler of high-quality handcrafted soap located in Holly Springs Mississippi. YesterYear Soap Products come in fabulous colors and scents for all to enjoy. As part of the normal manufacturing process, they find themselves with ‘extra’ soap bars, and instead of throwing them away they donate them to women’s shelters.

Here is what some of our Blog friends have said about our program:

Springtime has always been about good deeds for me. A fresh new start after the cold winter months, the feeling of happiness in the air, and the re-emergence into the beautiful weather. I can’t help but smile. Today we’d like to take a moment to recognize a company that gives back to their community and pat them on the back. Say hello to YesterYear Soap Company! Read more..

What’s All The Buzz about ‘African Black Soap’?

The latest trend in the natural soap community is African Black Soap. Known as Anago soap, Alata Simena or Dudu-Osun by Africans, this naturally mild soap is made from roasted cocoa pods and plantain skin ashes mixed with palm oil. A natural source of vitamins A and E as well as iron, African Black Soap is recommended for anyone with sensitive skin.
African Black Soap is also known for its excellent antiseptic properties and is very often used to treat acne, blemishes, oily skin and other skin problems. Because it cuts through oil so easily, it is also great for removing make-up. Unlike many antiseptic soaps, African Black Soap is also has superior moisturizing properties and is very effective in preventing wrinkles and facial lines and leaves the skin feeling and looking radiant, fresh, and healthy.

According to Dr. Oz of the popular Dr. Oz Show:
“Dryness is a common issue with skin, especially in colder climates. Facial dryness can make your skin look dull, which makes you look older. Kristy said that she had dry skin and wanted hers to look more hydrated. She drank a lot of water, but her skin was still dry.
African Black Soap. This product is made from plantain skins and is common in Ghana. It is a natural source of vitamin A, D and also contains fats to help soothe the skin. Use this product every few days. Purchase this product at health stores.”

All natural African black soap is made from dried plantain skins, palm leaves, cocoa pod powder, and kernel oil for an all-natural cleansing process. Plantains skins are largely what make this black soap so effective. When black soap is made, the skin of the plantain is dried. The mixture is heated and the heat must be constant in order to achieve the perfect brownish black color, texture & smell. Afterwards, cocoa pod powder is added. Cocoa pod is the shell of the cocoa fruit and also has natural healing properties.

We have a 4 bar gift set if you are interested in giving Black Soap a try. It comes on an all natural wood soap tray which is easy to clean and keeps your bar lasting longer. Click here to take a look.

One More Cause We are Working With

We received a letter from the North County Health Services asking us for a donation of some soap. They work with individuals who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Their program provides case management services, mental health counseling and assistance with securing necessary resources such as food, housing and transportation.

Many of their patients have very little income. As their health deteriorates, it becomes difficult to work and often leaves these individuals in great financial distress. Purchasing basic toiletries is often a luxury that is not in their budget.
We were pleased to send some of our soap bars in an attempt to help out, if even in a small way.

We have also been involved in contributing soap bars to battered women’s shelters. Many of the women and children who stay at these shelters around the country arrive with nothing other than the clothes on their backs. To escape an abusive situation, there may not be any time to take any possessions with them when they leave home, safety comes first. Rarely is the victim of domestic violence able to put together an overnight bag. Finding herself on the run, a battered woman may grab basics for her children, but will leave her own things behind, including personal care items.

Why do we mention this? In addition to making healthy and all natural soap we beleive we have a social responsibility. Our campaign is designed to bring awareness and to encourage other businesses to consider these charities with contributions of some of their products. We want other businesses to be aware of the needs of these types of shelters and hope that much needed supplies can be directed toward them.

The YesterYear Soap Company has a ‘Heart’

We have been very fortunate that our company has been successful. The only way we could have done this is through the loyal support of our customers.
With success comes the responsibility to share that with others. We have done promotions through contests and random drawings to spread our brand name. Now we would like to try something different.

We received the following comment recently:

“I would like to win this set for my husband. He is at stage 5 kidney failure, but he can’t get on the transplant list until he loses 170 pounds. He has lost 25 so far and he told me when he hits his first big goal of weighing less than 300 pounds, he is going to shave his beard off. It would be wonderful to have this set to give to him as a gift when he reaches his first big goal.

Thanks again for the chance to win!
Kelly”

We were so touched by her comments that we just had to send her a ‘YesterYear Soap Gift Set”.

We want to hear from you, our customers and blog readers. Do you know of a family or person that would like a ‘surprise’ gift? Someone that is having a difficult time and would could use a small act of kindness on your part? Perhaps you would like a YesterYear soap product that you just can’t purchase right now?

Let us know!

Our goal has always been to put a smile on the face of someone that least expects it.

Leave a comment below and tell us why you like our product or why you would like to ‘gift’ it and we will select giveaways based on these posts.
We will notify those selected via email. (Sorry, we can only ship within the US). Of course we would like to answer everyone’s wish, but we clearly can’t. However, we will do our best to help as many folks as we can.

Thanks for participating and spread the word!

Most soap is rich in harmful synthetic ingredients and is in no way useful or good for skin.

One of the mistakes that a person makes taking care of health is ignores his or her skin condition. Skin plays a great role in the defense of our organism from the attacks of diseases and any other harmful influences in general. But we tend to underestimate its impact in our well-being. Moreover we are prone to harm it with all the potentially destructive stuff that is broadly advertised and presented as wholly natural and beneficial.

We are talking about soap. Most soap we buy is rich in harmful synthetic ingredients and is in no way useful or good for skin. They have chemicals as ingredients and are able to damage skin and not help it. Contrariwise, organic, natural, handmade soap is a different thing. This kind of soap has only natural oils and substances as ingredients and therefore it guarantees that no intolerance response or undesired skin reaction will proceed. Moreover, they are much nicer to use than these beauty soaps we can see everywhere on the shop shelves.

What are the benefits of the natural soap? They are numerous, actually:

First of all, the main material they are made of is coconut, also olive or palm oil – so all the ingredients are absolutely natural and skin-friendly. Such soap is much recommended for sensitive skin, and also such problems as like acne, psoriasis, eczema, and etc.

Secondly, using natural soap will ensure that you will never experience any skin dryness or stretched feeling like the one you can get after using ordinary beauty soap.

Moreover, natural soap is usually produced in limited batches, which means that the product is always fresh.

Also, organic soap contains glycerin that is very nice and beneficial for skin. It possesses moisturizing effect and prevents dryness of skin.

Jojoba oil is another frequent natural soap ingredient and it is responsible for the maintenance of skin complexion balance.

Handmade soap contains only natural fragrances and it makes it very effective aromatherapy tool. The relaxing effect it produces is really quite nice. Moreover, the essential oils are great antibacterials and therefore they clean the body like nothing else.

Then, natural soap has always a natural colour due to the ingredient they contain. Lime tree soap will be of a pleasantly light-brown colour, while lavender soap will have some shade of blue.

What is more? Handmade soap is also noted for its lather as it is absolutely not harmful for the environment; while commercial soap is.

After reading this, think about the benefits of natural handmade soaps and the drawbacks of commercial soaps. The latter is also reported to be able to evoke skin cancer in the long run not to mention the way its usage affects nature. In any way, it’s up to everyone to decide what to use. But if you are in the least concerned about your health and your skin condition, you will meditate upon the subject and make conclusions.

You can even make homemade soap by yourself. There are a lot of recipes to your help; they require just a little time and wish. Try using homemade natural soaps and you will feel the difference.

YesterYear Soap is all natural and available online with FREE shipping from Abe’s Market.

Our Story

Making soap in the 1800's

I started a small business, the YesterYear Soap Company, just few months ago from my home.

I have no prior business experience and have spent the better part of my life raising two children the younger of the two is about to graduate from college in May. My husband is an airline pilot and is often away from home several days a week. With the nest empty, I wanted to do something that would be rewarding and enjoyable.

Why the soap business?

I wanted a business that could be done out of the home and did not involve a complicated inventory system or a large investment. I also wanted to get involved in a product that was healthy, could be sold online and in small mom and pop stores.

Why the name YesterYear Soap Company?

Our story begins with a piece of land that we purchased in northern Mississippi. It had been clear cut and was left with tree stumps and logs left over from the process.

We took several years and cleared the old logs and preserved the beautiful pine trees that were left behind.

We discovered several old log cabins in the area that were abandoned and falling apart. We took the cabins apart log by log, moved them to the property and reassembled them exactly as they once stood over 150 years ago. The cabins and property are now the home of the YesterYear Lodge in Holly Springs Mississippi.

After spending several years working on our project, we developed a special affinity toward the customs, traditions and products that were used by the settlers of the 19th century.

The ingenuity and resourcefulness of these early settlers was compelling. The soap we market is an all natural product similar to the same products produced by these early settlers.

I invite my visitors to follow along, make suggestions, learn from my mistakes and most importantly enjoy!
