A Great Review from ECO-HOME

It’s review time once again! I got a chance to use and review all-natural, handcrafted soaps from YesterYear Soap Company. The soaps arrived in a beautiful gift box (a set of 3 bars – Summer Citrus, Cherry Almond and Mango Papaya) and I was impressed from the very beginning by the packaging and the sweet aroma. Couldn’t wait to use them the next day!

My favorite out of the three? The Summer Citrus! The soap has a light scent and the moment you use it, you can tell the difference from a commercial brand. It glides over your skin smoothly, lathers up adequately and leaves your skin feeling clean, moisturized and rejuvenated. No dryness or itchiness associated with the chemicals present in a conventional bar of soap. Another plus point – it leaves a fresh fragrance in your bathroom!

YesterYear Soap Company preserves the timeless craft of artisan soap making – their soaps are handmade, one bar at a time, by human hands. No factories. The soaps are created from the purest and most natural ingredients (organic whenever possible) without added chemicals, preservatives or synthetic fragrances. Each soap bar balances the bar’s hardness, lather quality and moisturizing ability perfectly to give your skin a soothing, moisturizing and cleansing experience. Here are a few facts about their soaps.

What gives YesterYear Soap its fragrance?

Their fragrance oils are either essential oils or blends of natural aroma components that are created to smell like the real thing. Many of their fragrance oils are blended from essential oils, but because they are not guaranteed to be 100% essential oil they are called fragrance oils.

What makes their soap better?

A good bar soap balances bar hardness (durability), lather quality (both fluffiness and stability), and moisturizing ability. These different properties come from the different fatty acids that make up molecules of the vegetable oils we use as the base of our soap. Unfortunately, the fatty acids that are moisturizing are not those that contribute much to lather quality, and the ones that make great lather are drying to our skin. A perfect bar soap is the result of carefully balancing the fatty acids to maximize the bar’s hardness, lather quality, and moisturizing ability.

Is That Air Freshener Really Safe?

Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with the promise of creating a clean, healthy and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But studies show that many of these products contain phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) — hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects and reproductive problems. To protect consumers, government action to conduct more thorough tests and enact basic measures to limit exposure to phthalates is urgently needed. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, the high and often unmentioned phthalate content found in most manufactured air fresheners is dangerous to human health, especially to children and pregnant women. Other disconcerting ingredients commonly found in air fresheners include formaldehyde and phenol.

Formaldehyde is a highly toxic carcinogen, as well as a neurotoxicant and immunotoxicant. It is also in the top 10 percent of hazardous chemicals for humans. Low levels of exposure cause eye irritation, and burning in the nose, throat, and skin. Additional symptoms include nausea, headaches, memory loss, breathing problems, and menstrual disorders. Higher levels of exposure have been linked to cancer in the nose and throat. Internal consumption of formaldehyde can cause coma, convulsions, severe vomiting, stupor, and death. Direct eye contact with formaldehyde can cause blindness.
Xylene is a neurotoxin that can cause liver and kidney damage; it also poses health risks to unborn children. Long-term exposure can cause memory loss. Inhaled xylene causes symptoms like headache, dizziness, and vomiting. High intakes of xylene can also cause a loss of consciousness, pulmonary edema, and death. Pockets of fluid or air in the cornea area of the eye have also occurred.

According to the National Institutes of Health, phenol is toxic and hypersensitive individuals can die or suffer from very serious effects from minimal exposure. Skin contact with phenol can cause severe swelling, burning, peeling, and hives. This toxin is absorbed quickly and can additionally cause convulsions, circulatory collapse, delirium, and coma. Death and high toxicity levels often correlate directly with central nervous system depression, and poisoning of the heart, liver, eyes, lungs and kidneys. Phenol has also caused problems with animal fetuses and reproduction. The toxin additionally causes changes in the liver’s enzymes that regulate the absorption of various medications introduced into the body.

Want a Safe and Far More Useful Alternative?
YesterYear Soap Company produces all natural soaps which contain no harsh chemical additives. These bars of soap emit a fragrance that can make any kitchen or bathroom smell fresh and clean. Not only is the aroma pleasant, the soap can be used as a healthy alternative to chemical laden commercial soaps. Protect yourself and your family with this alternative to air fresheners next time.

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes — how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.”

A Review of our Soap from ‘Happy Campers’ Blog

I was really excited when I was given the opportunity to review Yesteryear Soap! I just love the smell and feel of block soaps that are hand made! The richness and texture just makes me happy!

Yesteryear Soap generously sent me three beautiful bars of soap. Mango Papaya, Mississippi Mud and Cherry Almond. In the Mango Papaya, you can see chunks of fruit and the color is so beautiful! I love the fact that the lather from the soaps washes away clean and not only leaves my hands smelling clean but also leaves behind a lovely scent in my bathroom.

We are proud to carry our products on the Eco-Bold web store.

From their store site:

Who’s Ecobold

We’re a bunch of dudes and dudettes that really, really, REALLY care for Mamma Earth and your health, we are seeing things change right before our eyes and we need to make a difference NOW…or else…soon we’ll have to start shipping air conditioners to Alaska. Today not only are products being made with several toxic ingredients that end up in our body, but they also end up depleting our one and only home: Earth. Droughts, storms, ice caps disappearing right before our eyes, carbon dioxide rates increasing, forests being depleted, kids being intoxicated with lead, we can go on and on and on. Our goal is to simply change the way products are made, so that they’re safe for you and for our environment after we dispose of them. We believe that if we unite together we can make change happen. By demanding sustainable, non-toxic, natural, recyclable products from companies, and voting with our dollar, other companies will eventually start to listen, we just hope that sooner rather than later…

What does Ecobold Approved mean?
